What is refrigerant in AC? Why is it necessary?

Every summer we tend to install the air conditioning systems in our homes and offices. Have you ever wondered how the AC works? The air conditioners work on the HVAC system which although complex works towards cooling the air and makes your homes and workplaces comfortable. Refrigerant forms an important part of any air conditioning system. The system can also work without the refrigerant but then it won’t cool as required.

What is refrigerant?

Refrigerant in AC is the main reason why the air conditioning system in your homes and offices work.¬† Although the mechanical systems also form an important part of the AC, it won’t actually be an AC without the refrigerants. Even if all the other parts and components like the fan, motor, etc. are working properly in an AC, then also it might not function the way you want it to in the absence of the right refrigerant. Bijli Bachao also aims to educate its clients about the use of refrigerant in AC. Refrigerant is used as a coolant in the coils used in the air conditioning system. Coils which are made of copper houses the refrigerant as the coolant. Refrigerants are generally available both in gaseous and liquid states.

How does the refrigerants work?

Refrigerants cool the air in your homes by absorbing the hot air in the room. While it is cooling the room it changes from a low pressure gas to a high pressure liquid. When this transition of the gas into liquid is finished, the other electrical parts of the AC like the fan and motor push out the refrigerant in AC from the coil and then the hot air is blown out of the system. Hot air is further converted to exhaust and blown out of the system of the machine.

Once the refrigerant does its function, it returns back to its original state in gaseous form. So basically, it works by sucking out the hot air from your room and blowing in the cool air at regular intervals. This is the reason coolant is an important component in an AC and if the system is low on the coolant, the air conditioning system won’t work properly. Refrigerant is never lost in the process of cooling, it just changes from one state to another. It has a set ‘charge’ all the time and the only way it loses its charge is through leaking. When the AC goes through leaking, it will require repair urgently as its cooling function will be affected adversely.

If you notice that your AC is blowing hot air, then you need to start looking urgently for repair. Or else if ice gets accumulated on the line of the refrigeration, it is time your AC needs repair. These days there have been many issues regarding the refrigerant in AC. Now a days environment friendly alternative of the fuel used in the AC are being used in the systems.
